Volunteer of the Year for 2016: Cantor David Margules

After serving on the ACC Executive Board and as Treasurer of the organization, Cantor David Margules was selected as the ACC Volunteer of the Year for 2016 by ACC President, Cantor Mark Goldman.

Cantor David Margules grew up in New York City and began his early musical training at the tender age of seven with flute lessons. A graduate of Ithaca College (B.M. 1976), David majored in voice, performing with the Ithaca College Opera Workshop in works by Mozart, Bernstein, and Weill. David moved to Atlanta in the early 1980’s and taught voice at the Atlanta School of Music and became the first cantorial soloist at The Temple on Peachtree Street. It was there that a passion for liturgical music and a calling as Cantor took root.

David returned to New York to study at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion-School of Sacred Music receiving the degree Master of Sacred Music (1987) and ordination as Cantor. 

Cantor Margules conducted a group of Reform Cantorial Students, touring Israel in the summers including a tour in 1988 at the International Zimriyah in Jerusalem. David served congregation Temple Sinai in Lawrence, New York from 1984-1991 and has been Cantor of Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael, Ca. from 1991-present. Cantor Margules is a frequent guest cantor at congregations throughout the U.S.

Cantor Margules served on the ACC board during the presidency of Vicki Axe and more recently served as the nominations committee chair and as the fundraising chair for the Memphis convention during the summer of 2010. David is currently the ACC’s treasurer.

David is married to Marney and they have two children, Benjamin and Danielle.
