Cantor Steven Weiss is the Cantor and Director of Education at Congregation Sha’aray Shalom in Hingham, Massachusetts, where he has served for the past nine years. Cantor Weiss received his Master’s Degree and ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion School of Sacred Music in May, 1996. Before coming to Congregation Sha’aray Shalom, he served at Temple Kol Emeth in Marietta, Georgia for ten years, both as a student and an ordained cantor. Originally from Great Neck, New York, Steven holds a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College where he studied Human Resource Management and Opera Performance. During his tenure at Ithaca, he was an active performer and was featured in a number of operas including The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, Gianni Schicchi, and The Marriage of Figaro with the Ithaca Opera Association. Cantor Weiss was also active in both the Ithaca College choir and chorus. His professional debut performance was of Avodath HaKodesh by Ernest Bloch, a favorite composition and the subject of Cantor Weiss’ Master’s Thesis.
Cantor Weiss was recently installed at the Vice-President of Internal Policy and Administration of the American Conference of Cantors. Cantor Weiss is very involved in the Boston Jewish community and serves as a member of the Camping and Scholarship Committees for Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and is the Chair of the Jewish Services Committee for the Jewish Vocational Services of Greater Boston. He also serves on the board of the URJ Eisner and Crane Lake Camps.
